Suicide Prevention Month
September is Suicide prevention month. This will be our first series of Pearls of Wisdom to bring information to families.
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in children between the ages of 10 - 19 The prevalence of suicide in teens fell from 13% in 2021 to 10% in 2024 which is good now but any percentage is too much when we think of the devastating effect on families.
Major risk factors for suicide in this population include untreated mental health disorders such as depression psychosis. Previous self harming behaviors such as cutting and burning. Childhood trauma- neglect, abuse can lead to depression and suicidal behaviors. Peer rejection is a major culprit especially in middle school when young adolescents are striving to fit in. Low self esteem, bullying, cyber-bullying through social media exacerbate risk factors for suicide.
Youths who are just starting to struggle with their sexual identity are especially vulnerable to negative emotions and need support.
What do I do as a parent?
Seek treatment if your child suffers from a mental health disorder.
Allow opportunity to express themselves without fear of being judged. Remain open. Allow them to be involved in some decision making when appropriate.
Monitor social media if you have concerns know their friends- Kids will frequently tell their friends first about their feelings of suicide.
Lastly - there are many online resources for teens and parents to assist. We strive to keep our youth safe and healthy. You are the first line of defense.
